At Two Paws Up, we believe a well balanced dog
is best achieved through socialization with people,
dogs and other animals the dog is likely to
encounter. We also recommend exposure to a
variety of sights and sounds of daily life, from
busy streets to bicyclists and runners to meeting
strangers and friends in public and at home.
Obedience training provides rules of behavior in
the home and in public. Consistent practice and re-
enforcement of the rules provides the dog with an
ordered, structured world that makes him feel
safe, trusting and confident. Most behavior problems occur because of the lack of socialization, training or consistency. Training the dogs is the easy part. Training the people is often the bigger challenge. Our goal is to help provide you with a well balanced and well behaved dog, along with the skills necessary to maintain your dog’s good behavior throughout his life.
Two Paws Up offers a full range of training and behavior modification strategies for your dog. We have group classes, In Board and Day Camp Training Programs, and Private Lessons. All classes are held at Two Paws Up facility 27361 N Lake Wohlford Rd Valley Center, just north of Woods Valley Rd. The facility has a lighted field for evening classes.
Why Obedience Training?
Safety A well trained dog listens! A well trained dog
will not dash out of the front door and into the street.
A well trained dog will not jump up on the counter and eat things that could harm him. A well trained dog will not knock you or your grandma down with an overexcited greeting. A well trained dog will not drag you down the street when all you want is a leisurely walk.
Socialization/Avoidance Training gives you and your dog techniques to use when greeting other dogs and people. You also learn how to read the body language of approaching dogs for a comfortable greeting.
Confidence A well trained dog gains confidence from
learning how to behave and knowing what is expected.
If your dog is shy or withdrawn, obedience training
makes your dog more willing to interact with the world. After training, you will have a calm, balanced dog.
Creating a Bond with your Dog Training makes your
dog much more attentive to you and your actions. A well trained dog is much easier to handle and more fun to be with than an unruly one. Friends and family will enjoy your four-legged friend too.

In Camp & Day Camp Training
Head Start
This is a program for people who would like to get a solid start with training. Once your dog has completed this program you and your dog will be encouraged to join our next scheduled Group Class to finish your training.
Do you need your dog trained and socialized but have no time to do it? Then this is the program for you. We will do the training for you and then teach you what your dog has learned with us. Your dog will sit, down, come, wait, stay, leave it, and loose leash walk, and heel. May master some off leash commands, depending on temperament and length of stay.
For dogs who have specific undesirable behaviors or socialization issues that are correctable in a limited number of sessions. Along with the private training session, your dog has the opportunity to exercise and play at our day camp. Your dog will learn the proper corrections for unwanted behavior and your dog will be taught a “go to your bed” command. At the end of the day, plan on a 15 minute personal session with the trainer for feedback, follow-up and specific homework. $50
Our trainer comes to your home or meets you at Two Paws Up and helps build a training program to fit your needs and goals for your dog.
Jeanne Miller, owner of Two Paws Up, has a lifelong love of dogs. However, that love was limited to family pets and friend’s dogs until February 2000 when she opened the doors to Two Paws Up and welcomed her first guests to Happy Camp. Over the years, Jeanne watched and learned about how dogs get along with each other and how they communicate with other dogs and with people. Some of her learning has come from books and working with experienced trainers, but much of what she has learned has come from the dogs themselves. As a former teacher, Jeanne applies many of her classroom techniques to successfully teaching dog and their people. Jeanne likes helping to socialize dogs and works with fearful and anxious dogs to help them develop confidence around both dogs and people.
Jesika Smith joined Two Paws Up in 2010 as a Dog Trainer. Like most people in the dog care industry, Jesika grew up loving dogs. Her work experience with dogs began as a dog walker for a pet sitting service in San Francisco. Her volunteer work in the dog rescue world steered her toward training, because she was tired of seeing dogs abandoned or dumped at shelters for what were very fixable behavior problems. Jesika trained as an apprentice for six months at the Canine Wellness Center in North San Diego County before graduating and moving out on her own as a trainer. Jesika teaches Basic and Advanced Obedience classes and Just for Fun Agility classes at Two Paws Up. She also manages the In Camp Training Program at Two Paws Up as well as conducting private lessons at camp or in customer’s homes for obedience and behavioral issues.
